Instructions
1. Take a blood sample using the lancet
2. Take a test strip from the bottle, close the bottle tightly.
3. Put a blood sample (0.7 µL) on the test strip
4. Place the strip in the meter and wait for the result to appear on the screen
5. Use the explanation below:
BHB concentration meaning
≤ 1.2 mmol / L normal
1.2 ≥ mmol / L subclinical ketosis
3.0 ≥ mmol / L clinical ketosis
6.5 ≥ mmol / L very serious form
At a concentration of up to 1.2 mmol / L, the animal is healthy. In the case of subclinical ketosis: 1-2 days extra energy. 3-5 extra energy applies to clinical ketosis.
If the prognosis is very serious, consult the veterinarian. Always take when in doubt
contact the vet. The cow can obtain extra energy by using Ketovit. Ask the dealer about this.
Consequences of ketosis (chronic milk disease)
- Ketosis causes 0.5% loss due to death in affected cows
5% of the affected cows cleared
- A cow affected by ketosis produces an average of 200 L less milk.
- Each case of ketosis costs around € 110
- Ketosis increases the risk of impaired fertility and displaced abdominal stomach.
Why test for ketosis?
- Supervising ketosis helps prevent economic losses.
- Regular screening can determine which cows have the highest risk of (sub) clinical ketosis.
When to test for ketosis?
- Cows are tested for BHB 2 to 14 and max. 21 days after calving. The frequency of (sub) clinical ketosis is highest in this period.
- Caution is advised when using the test within the first 48 hours
after calving.
- A positive test is very common during this period due to a large increase in plasma concentrations at calving.
