Cows go through a very complicated phase around the calves, due to the stress of the calves and the transition from a lot of roughage to a faster ration with high energy levels. The cow also tries to produce to her genetic maximum level, while she has to prepare for a new pregnancy. Increasing the energy level in the ration can disrupt the rumen effect whereby other problems, which mainly occur around the calves, will occur: a lack of calcium, mastitis, claw problems, twisted abdominal stomach, etc. All these problems around the calves have an effect on the immune system and the digestive tract and often cause a disturbed balance with many harmful bacteria in the intestines. This is bad for the animal's health. Digestive problems and diseases around the calves keep the cow from gaining her production potential and achieving an energy balance, so she won't get pregnant. The conclusion is that "calf problems" are the main cause of the "removal" of the farm.
